" …I do the work because I want to explore myself I do the work because I have something to say I do the work because I have seen something beautiful I do the work because I have seen something ugly I do the work because I want to engage others I do the work to be the type of person I wan to be I do the work to stay when I must go…"

-Excerpt from Statement Of Purpose by Dan Cautrell

My mission as an artist is to create work that is relevant and approachable to a diverse viewing public while maintaining a deep personal creative ideal. This approach to art making promotes the inclusive nature of art as a necessary and vital component of a successful society. I would also expect that my exploration of ideas and issues is no different than anyone else's search for clarity and it is this connection that I hope to cultivate. As an artist I consider myself to be a cultural representative, to some extent, and believe that I have a responsibility to create work that transcends the strictly personal aspect of my expression and uphold the "art for the people" ethic that is prevalent in the history of printmaking. A history that I have adopted which includes a rich social political and religious foundation that has made it an excellent vehicle for story telling, illustration and satire. In much of my work I do indeed incorporate words, phrases, and poetry to create an opportunity to further engage the viewer in a brief tactical conversation. With the intelligible use of word and image I have chosen to be an active participant in a culture of communication and interaction and beyond the sense of purpose and satisfaction that I receive I believe that the work becomes more than I who created it
