I am fascinated with all changing and living forms, whether mineral, vegetal, or anatomical. Also, I am committed to the tradition of American abstraction. In my work I seek a balance, a confluence of form and composition. The backbone of my work is a strong linear structure. I work as a constructivist, developing shapes that depend upon the unique energy of the rectangle. Within this framework I infuse forms that echo and enhance that structure. In the world of art, I have a strong affinity for northwest Native American relief carving especially those endless eyes folding out over a wooden plank. Another influence, though less visceral, is Norwegian rosemaling which seeps into my work like the ghost of some ancestral grandmother. I see this curvilinear bias in the work of many artists like Edvard Munch, Ryder, Dove, O'Keefe, Emily Carr, Guy Anderson, Terry Winters. These are creations, decorative and pictorial, traditional and modern, that I am drawn to. My work combines curvilinear pictorial harmony with provocative biomorphic imagery. | | |
