| Artist Statement: I am currently working on two bodies of images; one that is based on the figure and one that is based on the landscape, specifically, the human figure as figurations of form in space and landscapes as they relate to the horizon line. Recently I have begun intertwining the two bodies of images together and presenting them as group ensembles and allowing them to relate to each other conversationally. I began creating my Figurations Series because I was interested in knowing what space looks like, inside and outside, relating to the human form. I wanted each piece of work to be expressive of the figure that I work to embody in mood and character. In addition, bold colors paint the metaphysical side of what is unseen in the human soul. In 2007, I began working on my newer, Landscapes Series, moving from how the figure interacts with its surrounding space, to a more intentional void of human presence. This was very simply based on the idea of how the interaction of the earth and sky is literally through the horizon line. The work takes on a geometric, grid-like nature as the physical space of the piece collides from all directions. My Process: When in the studio I try to work quickly and instinctively to capture fleeting movements and relational body stances. I am motivated to find and capture that profound truth of reality which may be subtly disguised and confidently exposed through the use of line and color. Therefore each mark I make affects the final outcome in some way; in a great or terrible way. I strive for the marks that will pull a painting together as a complete work and have faith as a painter that they will come. In the same breath, I am fully aware that some marks may not work and will actually cause the painting to fall apart. However disappointing this may be, I know I must persevere and push through until the painting as a whole works again. I always seem to lose the painting before I find it again. |
